LEON

León is a historic and cultural city with a lot to offer.

Here are some examples of the things you can't miss:

Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santa María de Regla de León is a temple of Catholic worship, episcopal see of the diocese of León, Spain, consecrated under the invocation of the Virgin Mary. It was the first monument declared in Spain by Royal Order of August 28, 1844 (confirmed by Royal Order on September 24, 1845).

Begun in the 13th century, it is one of the great works of the Gothic style, of French influence. Known by the nickname of Pulchra leonina, which means 'Beautiful Leonine', it is located in the middle of the Camino de Santiago.

The cathedral of León is known above all for taking to the extreme the "dematerialization" of Gothic art, that is, the reduction of the walls to their minimum expression to be replaced by colored stained glass, constituting one of the largest collections of medieval stained glass windows in the world.

Valporquero Caves

The cave of Valporquero is located in the north of the province of León (Spain), next to the village of Valporquero de Torío, municipality of Vegacervera and 40 km from Carrizo.

The visitable itinerary, 1300 m long, runs through six rooms that gain in complexity and diversity of geological formations, from the room of the small wonders to the end of the wonders.

The rooms hold a veritable treasure trove of stalactites and stalagmites, which become an explosion of color thanks to the careful lighting. The route you can take, about three kilometers, is only a small part of the total number of galleries and caves discovered.

Las Médulas

Spectacular landscape of reddish color, clayey mountains of curious shapes and vegetal mass with holm oaks, oaks and chestnut trees. The Romans in the 1st century extracted gold using methods based mainly on hydraulic energy.

In the surrounding area there are numerous remains of forts and other settlements, and there are several hiking trails. There is also an Archaeological Classroom in Carucedo. It is considered the largest open-pit gold mine in the Roman Empire.

The engineering work carried out for the extraction of the mineral involved the alteration of the environment but resulted in a landscape of reddish sands, nowadays partially covered with chestnut and oak vegetation. It is considered a "cultural landscape" and has the denomination of "Cultural Park".

Astorga

Historical city with a unique charm that captivates everyone who visits it.

At the heart of Astorga is its imposing cathedral, impressive with its majesty and architectural beauty. Next to it stands the Episcopal Palace, designed by Antonio Gaudí, a modernist masterpiece that adds a unique touch to the urban landscape.

In addition to its impressive architectural heritage, Astorga is known for its delicious gastronomy, highlighting its maragato stew and its typical sweets such as puff pastries.

It is also an ideal starting point to explore the stunning natural landscapes surrounding the city.
